PStarting point 1258 m, highest altitude reached and arrival 1449 m. Among one of the most classic itineraries offered by Rocca Pietore, across a deep gorge of great and suggestive beauty. Time to complete walk: 1hour.
The walk starts from the little church of Sottoguda which overlooks a pretty little square surrounded by old rustic haylofts. In the summer these buildings are decorated with flowers and geraniums, following local traditions. Leave the village of Sottoguda behind you and proceed along the road that slowly takes you through the narrow gorge, characterised by practically vertical walls. After about two kilometres you will arrive in the green basin of Malga Ciapela, where "Valle Ombretta" and "Valle Ciamp Darei" open out, the latter coming down from "Passo Fedaia". On the left there are a few tunnels dug in the rock, dating back to the 1st World War. At a certain point on your left you will see a small inlet in the rock, in the shape of a niche: stop to admire the image of the Madonna, placed here during the celebration of the year of Mary in 1987. Further along, the gor ge opens out a bit and if you proceed on the track, on your right you will eventually find a small chapel dedicated to Saint Antony, a statue of the Saint is visible inside, on the alter. The church is quite ancient and was already existent in 1880. In 1934 it was dedicated to "Malga Ciapela's" military cemetery, in commemoration of the victims of Worl War I. Higher up, this time on your left, you may notice the last little cascade made by "Ru Franzei" just before it flows into the mountain river "Pettorina". From here onwards the valley widens out even more, showing a scorch of Marmolada di Serauta. After a few more hair pin bends the walk comes to an end the itinerary is completed . |
