Starting point 1449 m, maximum altitude reached and arrival 2080 m.. Evocative itinerary across the "Val Ombretta", one of the most beautiful valleys to be found in the area of the Marmolada group, with a breathtaking view on to the south west face of the Marmolada. Many traces are evidence of dramatic events during World War I. Follow CAI track sign posted as n.610. Walking time approx. 3 hours on the road, 2-2,30 hours using the shortcut.

Follow a well asphalted secondary road starting from Malga Ciapela and leading to camping "Malga Ciapela", go past the camping site and after about 1 kilometre you will get to a bridge closed to vehicle transit by a bar across it. You will leave your car here and start walking. Go across the bridge and follow a wide bridle track on your left; after a first steep bit you will find the climb levels out slightly and becomes more regular. This is the typical structure of mountain roads made during the 1st World War: the slope couldn't be too steep, as this would have slowed down the already hard task of transporting heavy armament and ammunitions at high altitudes. Ignore the steep shortcut on your right and keep on the easier road that gently winds upwards to the foot of "Monte Fop" (2550m). You will eventually reach a road fork, do not take any notice of path n. 689 on your left which leads in "Val di Franzedas", instead continue on the wide bridle track which bends sharply to the right and will shortly bring you to the mouth of "Val Ombretta". From this point it is possible to admire the beautiful valley which opens out in front of you: a most gorgeous valley, with the beautiful south face of Marmolada on the right, the "Pale del Monte Fop" on the left; the valley is closed in on the further side by "Monte Ombrettola" (2931 m), by "Sass Vernale" (3058 m), and by the peaks of "Ombretta orientale" (3011 m) from which emerges the strange shape of "Fungo d'Ombretta" (2653 M) which overlooks onto the "Falier" mountain shelter ("Rifugio Falier). At this point the bridle track ceases and you will start following a clearly marked path which passes between the "casere" (mountain huts) of "Malga Ombretta" (1904 m), steepens slightly as it goes up a sharp slope and that will get you to "Rifugio Onorio Falier all'Ombretta" in about 40 minutes. This refuge belongs to the Venice section of CAI and and during the last decades has been run by the Dal Bon family of Canale d'Agordo . This excursion comes to an end here, but for those who wish to walk further there are two possible options: one is to follow path n. 610 which continues towards Passo di Ombretta. Follow track n.612 from behind the refuge and climb up "Vallon d'Ombretta" and continie towards "Forcella della Banca di Val Fredda"(2777 m.) sign posted as n. 678. Second possibility is to follow track 612 up to "Forcella Bachet" (2863 m.) or the Ombrettola pass. Built in 1911, the "Rifugio Onorio Falier all'Ombretta" was used as the military headquarters of of the 206th "Val Cordevole" Alpine Company . The building was razed to the ground during an Austrian artillery attack and was reconstructed thanks to the contributions of the Falier family.
