Beautiful Rocca Pietore is the principal village in the chain of charming hamlets snuggled along the Pettorina River Valley between the steep slopes of Dolomiti in the upper Cordevole River basin. Formed by the union of the smaller Rue Franzedas and Rue Scalon, the torrential Pettorina River flows down the valley several kilometres before joining the Cordevole River and going on into the small valley of Caprile. The seventy-five square kilometre area of the Rocca Pietore territory is one of the largest in the Agordino area where about fifteen hundred friendly people live in villages whose very names are redolent of history: Col di Rocca, Bosco Verde, Pian, Sottoguda, Malga Ciapela, Digonera, Saviner, Laste, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Masaré and Sopracordevole.
The Rocca Pietore territory is famous for its natural beauty from the highest peaks of the Marmolada to stunningly beautiful “Serrai di Sottoguda” gorge. For centuries mountain climbers have returned again and again to the area and written about it extensively. Tourists delight in the many excursions and activities made possible by the cable-car which goes from Malga Ciapela to Punta Rocca like actually being able to go skiing on the eternal glacier of Marmolada.
Rocca Pietore / Malga Ciapela is an important part of the Dolomiti Superski which represents 1.220 km of fabulous ski slopes. Besides mountain climbing, skiing, sight seeing and shopping visitors can enjoy delicious cuisine and grappe available in Rocca Pietore.
The church of St. Mary Magdalene, built in 1442, and a national monument today, dominates the beautiful village of Rocca Pietore, with its Ghibelline spire on the bell tower. In the gothic style, it hides within it valuable works of art: such as the wonderful altar-piece made in 1517 and the beautifully worked tabernacle which dates back to 1600. It is well worth a visit to be able to fully admire all the art treasures housed inside it.
The chapel at Sottoguda was built in 1486 as a result of a vote taken among the inhabitants of
Sottoguda and of Laste. In 1881, it was badly damaged by a serious fire. In 1094, a third bell was added to the two existing ones, and in 1922 the bell tower was rebuilt on the base of the previous one. On the outer facade of the chapel, in two niches at each side of the entrance, are two antique statues of Saints Rocco and Fabiano.
Saint Gothard’s Church at Laste, situated on a smell hill, boasts a panorama of extra beauty looking over most of the valley of upper Cordevole, and you can admire the majestic walls of Monte Civetta and of Monte Pelmo. It was built in 1863.
The Sanctuary of Santa Marie delle Grazie, which, even though it is halfway between the villages of Alleghe and Caprile, belongs to the municipality of Rocca Pietore.
Dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, it has become so famous over the years that it is considered the most popular of the places to worship the saint in all the valleys of the Dolomites. The sanctuary was started in 1947 and consecrated on 22nd August 1965. It is decorated with stupendous works by famous contemporary artists, such as Toni Benetton and Augusto Murer. Near to the sanctuary is the ancient chapel of Calloneghe, consecrated in 1645.
I Serrai di Sottoguda.
Among the many natural attractions that Rocca Pietore offers, the “Serrai di Sottoguda” is the most spectacular. Considered one of the wonders of the Veneto Alpes, the steep sided gorge cuts through the two villages of Malga Ciapela and Sottoguda and is home to the famous torch lit processions which wind along its paths at special times of the year. Although its origins are lost in time, the gorge is thought to have been created by the Marmolada glacier and scored deeper and deeper by the Pettorina River. “Serrai di Sottoguda” can be visited in summer as well as winter and offers truly amazing sights.
